Two Thousand and Seventeen...

I'm pretty sure in the scope of things we may be a few years off on our calendar, but as it is generally recognized currently it's 2017. June, 4th of said year to be exact. The last few months have been jarring, tumultuous and full of growth and learning. The older I get the more I appreciate the unexpected struggles and tragedy in life; not for the pain they are always paired with but the inevitable growth that follows when you face those challenges head on and gain some wisdom and experience.

My last blog post included a painting of a primate. A subject I have approached several times and will continue to do so throughout my art career. It becomes increasingly clear to me as a primate with opposable thumbs that each of us must choose to face our struggles head on to find any satisfaction in the day to grind that leads us down the paths we stumble across.  I find myself enjoying the moments when I am engaged in a painting and realize I am completely lost in new territory of technique, color, process, design or composition. I don't feel that every aspect of my art is pushing me to a new precipice as a painter; however, I do try to embrace the concept focus onpeak performance regardless of the actual outcome.  I know that 30 years from now the multiple tools and techniques I will develop from solving a new problem today will help me continue to paint at a level that always pushes some aspect of my ability.

New Orleans

I recently resumed doing some life drawing, and after a two year absence I found my line work, gestures and proportions to be off. Not just a little off....  I felt like I was learning a new skill. One that had been so familiar to me in the past. Neurologically speaking, approaching a task at which you are not competent at is a vital part of keeping a healthy dialogue among your neurons. I hope I set off a much needed wildfire internally to clear the mental forest of dead undergrowth and make way for seeds of inspiration. I did find I was happy with a few of my sketches, but most of all I found deep satisfaction in reconnecting with fellow artists and honing my craft. I may be rusty, but that wont last long. I have been working since last fall on slowly implementing better discipline in my life. Discipline with my daily life and my artistic pursuits as well as spending more time getting out and enjoying some life in public with strangers and friends.

I am currently working on several original works and commissions at any given time and working some in my alternate profession. One of my goals for the next 18 months is to connect with artist and artist communities in other states and countries and spend some time painting outside of Tulsa. Please feel free to comment or share my blog. I am sure there are some of you out there that find this mix of nonsensical rambling and actual blogging frustrating.... well this probably isn't for you. I will be adding some pictures and talk some more about art, art process and how to continue to produce art that is important to you in a world full of so many distractions in the next few days.

Thank you to all of you who have supported me, bought, appreciated, shared or even hated on my work. I will continue to create and sponge up as much of this life as I can get away with. I hope to bring some beauty to you all in the mean time.

Pain can result in transformation and positive growth. Keep growing and learning Tulsa!

BILI APE/STUDIO UPDATE

upload.jpg

The Bili Ape was discovered in 2003 in the Northern Congo. It is ground dwelling like the gorilla but looks like a large chimpanzee. Bili Apes do not behave aggressively towards humans but they do hunt lions. Yup.... Lions. They are also bi-pedal and use tools. I am fascinated by the link we share with primates. This particular species seems to recognize that link as they are known to surround humans and watch the curiously but not harm or bluff charge them. Primates tend to thrive in moist environments for obvious reasons (hence the lack of the giant desert panda) which results in a majority of primate bones being claimed by the earth and not fossilized for us to use to piece back together our biological lineage. The number of species that humans may have coexisted with at one time is a curious and thought provoking subject that conjures up imagery so ancient and ingrained in our DNA that we see it reproduced time and time again in art, media and literature. I am fascinated by this planet and the depth and breadth of life that it host.

I am going to be doing quite a bit of animal based art this year as well as getting back to some figure drawing and painting. It has been a year or more since my last figure drawing session and I imagine I am getting rather awkward with my life drawing through lack of practice. Audio books and podcast have replaced most of my music during painting and commuting over the past couple of years. There is a vast amount of fascinating information that is available for free/very cheap and the older I get the more I value getting to absorb new ideas, concepts and stories. I am going to be in the studio this weekend and already have an idea of where I want to go with my next painting, of course I never know if my idea is going to have much to do with the finished product and I often begin painting with no concept of how to proceed.

I will beusing this blog to discuss the creative and technical process of my painting as well as exploring some more of my thoughts or maybe just writing to myself. I do feel it important to document the creative process. There are definitely more important things in the world than what I am doing in my studio, but it is none-the-less important to me all the same.

Please feel free to comment or contact me with questions and dialogue .

Upcoming Events

I will be putting up some new work starting April 1st for the 2017 Norman Music Festival at Studio Ink Gallery, 220 E. Main St.

The festival is on Saturday, April 23rd. It is a fun day for festival and music fans, people watchers and alien clones. I will be out and about Norman that day and will be stopping in the gallery periodically to all things art, beef jerky or bigfoot related. I am a bit pressed for time tonight but one of my new interest is keeping up with this website. As much fun as I have altering old content into a bunch of nonsense that I alone think is funny, I will attempt to put out some useful content and maybe even discuss some of my thoughts on art, the creative process and life as we know it.

I also currently have most of my large works on canvas proudly on display at Landon Thomas Designs.  You can usually find Landon hard at work at 3517 S Peoria Ave, Tulsa OK. He is a talented custom jeweler and has an eye for design and detail. Contact me if you are interested in making an appointment with me to visit my studio or my displayed work or just stop in Landon's place during business hours. I am looking forward to a great 2017. Last year was a trial by fire for myself and many of my loved ones. I hope we are all a little wiser and tougher going forward.

So Everyone, Let's open our hearts to our neighbors and our wallets to our local artisans and keep this America thing on track.

No Mom, I was abusing speech to texas. I'll call you fat. Just pick duck when I call...

I really have felt like all of the games of connect four I've won this year were in preparation for this connect sixteen tournament I signed up for. I know I only played four games, but I felt like I was calculating and decisive, I beat me fair and sqaure.

Maybe the most difficult part of hosting your own connect 16 tournament is the fact that no matter how many times I win, Alex Trebeck still won't adopt me. I even sent him my entire collection of pogs and I ordered us matching hip receptacles. Most folks call them fanny packs, but really who doesn't want to be hip and receptive?  I like to think Alex has all the secret answers in his pack. Like, "what is infinity hugs for a trillion trillion!?", or my favorite, "What is hashtag hashtag?"

No one knows. No one. Knows.

This is some really good content man, can I put this on my website? Yes, I can. Done. Sweet.

So as I may now well realize, writing this blog to me from me and then reading and responding to it myself was a sage hirsuit.  It was a bit harry figuring out all of these smashy keys and when to press what, or when not to mark your computer wild dingo style so blood hounds can find it if it ever turns into a robot like on transformers.  Never the less, I am here. I did not let me down. Not today self. I'm writing a blog to me and it's going to be awkward as hell.

As I am already well aware, the picture above is of me and my some lady that stole a lot my socks for four years. This picture was taken in Chili in 1978 after climbing to the top of a large hill to dynamite fish for llamas. This is one of the more disturbing things I have witnessed in Tulsa. Anyone with common sense should be able to relate at the disgust and anger I felt when I observed this injustice. The ADA has been extraordinarily clear about the rise/run requirements of accessible ramps and that building in the background clearly has violated the 1:12 ration. That's not safe for grandma or anyone needing an assistive device for community ambulation. Don't believe me, then I can go look at this website. http://www.disabilitysystems.com/ramps/ramp-guide.html

Next is one of the FOUR THOUSAND BURST SHOTS I took trying to capture some lighting during one of the govermnent's "thunderstorms". Yeah write. I am, that's why I'm typing. What?

Well, my to do list is done and I shared some good memories with me tonight. Can't wait to artz and copy some ideas from some one else. I wonder if you can reverse engineer belly button smells? That's good, I should write that one down. It's so weird to have an art studio but never be able to find a pen when I need it.

It's good to get back to keeping myself up to date on what I've been doing.

I know I always feel this way when I have one foot on something really cold and the other one on something of a significantly higher temperature. I am excited to announce that one of my submissions for the Oh Tulsa! show was accepted. I can basically go to the show and then coast from here on out.

I think one of the hardest parts of being a full time artist is not only the anxiety of waiting to find out if your work is being accepted and taken seriously, but wondering whether or not it's being taken at all. Really, if your work isn't stolen out of some mansion in the middle of the night by an expert art thief how can you even look in the mirror as a person? Luckily the people that print money and bibles don't have to worry about that feeling. Everyone steals money and bibles.... I wonder if anyone steals bibles for money. Sorry Jesus, gotta make wine out of two loaves and a fish, you/I know what I'm talking about.

So I uploaded some pictures of things that have been going on around the studio. I will tell me about them so I can keep up to date with RedBeard Studios!

Up next is a picture of my dog sniffing another dog's junk. My dog likes to do this but so did the manager at the rib crib I worked at when I was 16 and he was super cool. This isn't my studio. It happened a long, long time ago. I just figured now that my dog is old enough I would humiliate him in front of his friends on facebook.

IMAG0028.jpg

This next picture is of an acrylic piece I did for a show called "Oh Tulsa".  The show is starting August 7th at Living Arts of Tulsa. This painting is 5'x5' and I painted it by my self. I can ride a bicycle and drive a car with my knees but not at the same time, but I already knew that. I once got hit in the face with a bat when I was on my bike. It didn't even hurt. I'm not sure if it still got the bug it was after but it's fur reminded me of Diane Rehm's pillow and it's wafty essence. She is no Terry Gross, but oh buddy... I would giver her the factual account of why my cable provider was skimming megabytes from me and my new age microwave (he does hot yoga for crisps sake) and then just drop the hint that if she ever wanted to uncover some kind of political scandal in my city, she would need to pay a lot of wealthy people off just to get started. Like entire boards that control zoning and taxes, but who cares. It's not like people are thirsty somewhere.

I painted this crap live at Mayfest on Sunday. Not Sure which Sunday, but if you were there you saw me handle that paint like an artist handles paint in front of a small, moderately interested group of people. I was on point and I am not sure what happened to this painting, if you bought it please see me about giving me some money, otherwise see first paragraph. 9MAKING PROGRESS!!!0  sic huh!?

Winter 2015

This winter has been typical, cold and dark... but I have stirred from my hibernation and finally finished up some big projects and began some new ones as well. I started a mural for a dark elf that lives in the bushes near my house. But Kirsty Ally finished it up in the beginning of 2015. The mural is a combination of aerosol and acrylic. This next photo was somthing else I did for some bologny and a ham sandwich.

This photo is from a test shoot, so there is some gym equipment in the way. I am hoping to return to see if the fish are still breathing and once again use my work light to make grilled cheese sandwiches to sell to all the drunk kids leaving the bar…

I am hoping to return to see if the fish are still breathing and once again use my work light to make grilled cheese sandwiches to sell to all the drunk kids leaving the bar when I am still painting. Thanks to Joe James for photography.

With the completion of my most recent mural I have been able to return to some original studio work. I look forward to sharing my most recent misconceptions with me as they are completed.

Dia De Los Muertos and Other Happenings at RedBeard Studios

It's been far too long since I have updated my blog and I have been looking forward to getting around to sharing all of these pictures with those of you who keep up with the studio!

This summer was very busy, I had several live painting events and a couple of weekend shows. My friend Joe James set up his go pro camera and made a kick ass stop motion video of me doing a live aerosol mural at MixCo in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have two versions to share, the video is the same but different music tracks.

I recently took some paintings down to Studio Ink Gallery in Norman and am looking forward to going down to visit again soon. There is a large arts conference going on during October and they expect a good turnout.

The Dia De Los Muertos festival is happening November 1 at living arts in downtown Tulsa.  For several years now, the festival has been known for its food, culture and murals. The murals are done by local artist selected from submitted sketches. I was unable to participate last year and promised myself that I would be involved in it this year. The submission process required an 8x10 sketch but that really isn't my style. Those of you that know me, know that I don't like working small. I find it rather inhibiting.

   My solution was obvious....

8'x10' sketch for mural submission

Several hours later I had my sketch and a cool new piece for studio visitors to enjoy in October.

This year's selection process was changed secondary to difficulty finding a building that was available to paint on. Living Arts decided to select four artist to work on a 12x15 mural in their own studio and have it hung up during the festival. I was one of the four artists chosen and I am glad to have an opportunity to let so many people see what it is that I really love doing. Another local artist I have met several time Price Jones was also chosen, he does some unique work and I am interested to see what he brings for the festival.

I picked up my canvas on friday the 10th of October and stretched it and gessoed it on my studio wall with the help of life long friend David Council Saturday night. Sunday I sketched out my line work.

It took about 5 tries before I was satisfied with my under drawing.

Completed mural will be displayed at Living Arts in Downtown Tulsa. November 1, 2014.

I was particularly pleased with this mural. It looks good in a photograph, but it is engaging and overwhelming in person. There is a lot of subtle detail that takes a while to even notice; stenciling, reflective metallic paint and use of different clear coats add some interesting visual effects. The bottom lip has several gloss coats, just enough to look a little more realistic than it would otherwise. (I would in no way consider myself a painter of realism) One of my favorite additions was some glow in the dark paint.... campy? Sure. Childish? maybe, but oh is it cool.

There is an outline of a skull and the words "Los Muertos" in glow in the dark paint so that as you view the piece in alternating lighting it changes from a lively portrait that reads "In Memory Of" to a skull that  reads "The Dead".

I don't know that many people will get to view the glow in the dark portion, but it is there! Easter egg for you fellow dorks.

I also had a chance to work with some members of OVAC for a yearly not for profit show called Momentum Tulsa. The show spotlights artist under 30, giving local talent a chance to experience a submitting work and hopefully having it accepted. The show turned out well and I met some other local artist. I learned a lot about organizing an event, my experience was great and I hope to do it again.

The photos I got from the show are mostly of the other members of the committee. Several of them also participated in Momentum Tulsa. Tommy and Tahlia Ball brought their game face as usual. Tommy had an amazing cityscape of Tulsa done in water color. Tahlia made an entire meal encased in jello, one of my favorite installations of all time.  My camera battery went dead after about 20 minutes and I forgot my back up, so I only was able to photograph a few of the art pieces.

RedBeard Beard Oil

Well, I decided to go ahead and do something that's been on my mind for a little while now.

I've been growing a beard (on my face) for a while now and I have experimented with several different variations of beard oils that I made at home from natural and essential oils.

I have been using a few ingredients faithfully with good results and instead of always explaining to people how I take care of my beard, I was hoping to help them maintain theirs... So I thought it was only fitting that RedBeard Studios have it's own beard oil.

1 0z amber bottle of beard oil with dropper available at www.etsy.com/shop/redbeardstudiostulsa for $15

It's pretty damn awesome. It smells great, and if you have a beard and aren't using a good beard oil or making your own and wondering why people mistake you for feral instead of manly... here is a good solution.

Thanks!

I decided to start my week off right, doing something to remind me what makes me most passionate about my craft. A little street art was the cure for a creative block and I've been working furiously to get ready for several up coming events in May.

I will be participating in the Brady District First Friday Art Walk in May. Several local artist have been given the assignment of doing a portrait in the medium of their choosing of another local artist. Fifteen attempts into my portrait, I realized how long it had been since I had spent any serious time doing portraits but the rust is coming off and I think I will have something beautiful to show.

As a side project RedBeard Studios (me) and 17 year old brother have stripped down this old vista shadow and are rebuilding it. Planning on finding an appreciative home for it when the restoration is complete.

We will be offering some children's art workshops in June and July. The workshops will meet twice a week for three weeks and take the children through the entire process of turning raw canvas into a stretched finished painting of their own. We are also working on setting up some adult workshops and private classes. For more information feel free to email me at Redbeardstudiosllc@gmail.com

Hope to see you in May!

Prints are in!

I'll have about ten of these prints available this week. This one is stretched and custom framed by RedBeard Studios. It's beautiful, but you can't have it because it's already been sold to Danny Cash. I'll be happy to make you your own for a cool $200.

I know some of you have been asking me about this for a while...

Since my selfish cousin had to go and buy up the original painting, I have been asked by many of you on facebook if prints are available. The answer is almost.... I have the canvas to print on and am meeting another artist friend to get these prints straight from my brain to your hands. I am planning on doing some small and large reproductions and will post availability and prices as soon as I have the details. Go and check out my friend www.tommyleeball.com. Tommy has helped me out with several opportunities over the past year or so and I expect to see him as a long lasting part of Tulsa's art community for years to come.

Another busy week here in the studio! I am almost finished framing up the commissioned work for Sisserou's (they should be opening the next week or so) and am hoping to have some prints released sometime this month. Thought I would snap a photo of the finished product to share. I hope those of you in Tulsa have been taking advantage of the amazing weather we have had this week!

Welcome to RedBeard Studios!

My name is Charles Caleb Burgess and I am the owner and operator of RedBeard Studios LLC in Tulsa, Ok. I finally made the jump from working in the medical field to full time artist back in November 2013.  I plan on posting to this blog regularly to share the goings on of the studio for those who are as passionate about art as I am and for those who just like to be nosy.

I just finished up my first big one man show at the Holliman Gallery at Holland Hall in Tulsa. The artist reception was amazing, so special thanks to those who made it out. I am currently working hard at some commission pieces for a new downtown carribean restaurant "Sisserou's" which will open in a few weeks.

I have a wonderful level headed wife and two crazy dogs. My best friend David paints with me in the studio often and his band practices there as well. Below is short video you might enjoy. It is a stop motion piece a friend of mine made of an aerosol mural I did for a family here in Tulsa during the summer.
